Zurich's old town and lakefront, medieval Schaffhausen below the Munot fortress, the Rhine Falls up close and the painted houses of Stein am Rhein, in one private day.
The day begins in Zurich: the lake, the old town, the university quarter and the Bahnhofstrasse. Then north to Schaffhausen, where the round Munot fortress watches over the Rhine and the medieval streets are worth a walk.
At the Rhine Falls a panoramic lift takes you down to platforms close to the spray, and in summer a boat can take you closer still. On the way back you stop in Stein am Rhein, a small town of painted facades and half-timbered houses on the river.
