Lake Lucerne is one of my favourite places in Switzerland.
Not only because of Lucerne itself, but because once you leave the city behind, the lake changes completely.
The mountains get closer. The shoreline becomes quieter. Small villages appear between the water and the slopes, with old houses, private villas, chalets and hotels that you would never notice from the road.
For me, this is one of the best ways to experience Central Switzerland.
On your own boat.
Your boat, your skipper, your day
The boat is yours for the day.
You can board from central Lucerne or, depending on where you are staying and what is possible on the lake, from a convenient point closer to your hotel or property.
If you are staying in Zurich, your private driver brings you down to Lucerne as well.
Once you are on board, there is no timetable to follow.
Your skipper knows the lake and takes care of the route according to the weather, the water and how you want to spend the day.
Sometimes I plan a route beforehand.
Sometimes I prefer not to.
Leave Lucerne behind
Lucerne is beautiful from the water, but I particularly like what happens once you leave the city.
The lake opens up and you start moving towards the smaller villages around the Vierwaldstättersee.
Weggis sits beneath Mount Rigi and has almost a Riviera feeling on a warm day.
Continue further and you reach Vitznau, another little village between the mountain and the lake.
Across the water there are places like Beckenried, Gersau and further south, the smaller villages towards the more dramatic arms of the lake.
Your skipper can tell you what you are passing as you go.
The old hotels.
The private villas.
The chalets on the hillside.
The little harbours.
And the houses that you would probably never notice if you were simply driving from Lucerne to your next destination.
That is one of the reasons I prefer seeing this region from the water.
Weggis and Vitznau
If I had to choose one side of the lake to spend more time around, I often come back to Weggis and Vitznau.
They sit beneath Rigi and look directly across the water towards the mountains.
Depending on the day, you can stop somewhere along the shore, have lunch, go for a short walk or simply stay on the boat.
Vitznau also gives you another possibility.
If you decide halfway through the day that you want to go up into the mountains, this is one of the gateways to Mount Rigi.
Boat in the morning.
Mountain in the afternoon.
Then back onto the lake.
That is the kind of day I like.
Gersau and the quieter side of the lake
Gersau is another place I like because it still feels small.
You pass it on the water almost without noticing if nobody tells you to look.
It sits beneath the mountains on a particularly beautiful section of the lake, and it is the kind of place where I would rather stop for a drink or lunch than add another formal attraction.
There are several places like this around Lake Lucerne.
That is why I would not give everybody the same route.
Swim somewhere nobody planned
In summer, one of my favourite things is simply to stop.
Your skipper finds the right place according to the conditions.
Then you jump in.
There are quiet bays and stretches of water away from the busiest parts of the lake where swimming becomes part of the day rather than an activity that needs to be scheduled.
Music on.
Drinks on board.
Children in the water if you are travelling as a family.
Nothing complicated.
Private boat experiences on Lake Lucerne can also include activities such as paddleboarding, tubing or other water sports depending on the boat, weather and lake conditions.
Lunch from the water
I also like using the boat as transportation rather than treating it as a circular cruise.
There are restaurants and hotels around the lake where arriving from the water changes the whole feeling of the day.
You can cruise for a couple of hours, stop for lunch, then continue somewhere completely different afterwards.
Or we keep lunch on board.
Again, it depends on you.
Some guests want champagne and a long lunch.
Some want music, swimming and almost nothing else.
Both work.
A few places I keep for the right guest
There are small bays where I would rather stop for half an hour than rush towards another village.
There are old villas and historic properties along the shoreline with stories that are much easier to understand from the lake.
There are places where Mount Rigi seems to rise almost directly out of the water.
And there are sections further into the lake where the landscape becomes steeper and much more dramatic, almost like travelling into a different part of Switzerland.
This is where I let the skipper do what a good skipper does.
Show you the lake rather than simply drive the boat.
Combine it with the mountains
Lake Lucerne is also one of the easiest places to combine water and mountains in the same day.
We can connect the boat with Mount Rigi.
We can build it around Pilatus.
Or we can keep you entirely on the water and make the lake the experience itself.
The lake historically connected the different parts of Central Switzerland and was an important transport route long before visitors came here for sightseeing. Even today, it links naturally with the mountain railways around Rigi, Pilatus, Klewenalp and the surrounding region.
Sunset instead of sightseeing
If you are staying in Lucerne, I particularly like the lake later in the day.
Spend the morning somewhere else.
Come back to your hotel.
Change.
Then go out again in the late afternoon.
A private boat, a bottle of something cold, music and the mountains as the light changes.
No sightseeing programme.
No checklist.
Just the lake.
Sometimes that is the better experience.

If you are coming from Zurich, your private driver brings you down to the lake as well.
The boat can be yours for a few hours or for most of the day, depending on what we decide to do.
You can swim, stop for lunch, add water activities, visit the smaller villages or simply let the skipper take you where the lake looks best that day.
Lake Lucerne is one of those places where I do not like planning every minute.
